Volunteering Downeast Style

Ian Pentland and Maddox Ralls clean up Mother's Beach.

A society that relies on generalized reciprocity is more efficient than a distrustful society, for the same reason that money is more efficient than barter. Trust lubricates social life. Networks of civic engagement also facilitate coordination and communication.

Robert D. Putnam

Our Volunteering Philosophy

Achieving Maine promotes flexible, agile, and emergent forms of civic engagement that combine innovative volunteering and “service learning” initiatives to cultivate the self- esteem and confidence of our participants, establish offline social networks and personal relationships, build trust through shared achievements, and contribute positively to the quality of life for the members of our community.  Through volunteering and teamwork, Achieving Maine also strives to expand the informal social support systems available for youths in crisis.

Volunteering Is Multidimensional

Volunteering Gives More Than It Takes

Volunteerism is an essential thread woven into the fabric of all societies. The world’s one billion volunteers constitute or contribute to the safety nets and social protection systems available to some of the most vulnerable populations.   Volunteering is an act of civic engagement that contributes to self-development and cultivates social capital in communities.
